CNN & YouTube Debates

July 5th, 2007

This summer and fall, YouTube and CNN are moving the political process firmly into the new millenium. The two have paired up to find citizens to make political history by having the presidential candidates answer questions submitted via YouTube videos.

According to YouTube,

The first debate will feature the Democratic candidates on July 23rd in Charleston, South Carolina. Submit your question for the Democrats between June 14 and July 22 (the earlier the better). The CNN political team will choose the most creative and compelling videos, and if yours is one of them, you may get the chance to fly to Charleston to watch the debate live and offer your reactions afterward on YouTube’s political video blog, Citizentube.

So if you’ve always wanted your voice to be heard, now’s your chance to submit your question — grab a camera and get rolling!

Why are you using only YouTube as the medium for submitting questions to the candidates? Why don’t you level the playing field and solicit questions by e-mail? If one does not have access to a video camera, one is not able to submit a question. Seems rather elitist, don’t you think? You must be Republicans.

i’m not a republican, actually, and there’s really no reason to be snotty when you leave a comment. i think you raise a good point, actually, but like it or not, the election process occurs on television and now, the internet. those that can’t or won’t use either medium will miss out on the process.

i might point out that if you’re able to leave questions by email, you must also have a computer and internet access, so that’s rather elitist as well?

I am still waiting to hear someone in the US political system or the US media to bring up the question of why was it, that following the 9/11 attack on the WTC no attempts were made to rescue people from the roofs of the building by helicopter? Since I have been out of the country a lot I may have missed it. The explanation given in the foreign press at the time was that none of the people in the buildings made it to the roof because the access doors to the roof had been barred by order of the NYC Police Dept. It was further reported that this order was against the advice of the NYC Fire Dept. Frankly I don’t know what the truth is but every time I see images of people jumping from the upper floors I feel that this issue really needs an airing. Mayor Guiliani should be able to clarify this

hmm… perhaps you should submit a question to YouTube and see if giuliani answers it?
