Global Warming “Unequivocal”
February 3rd, 2007
As you may have heard by now, the world’s leading climate scientists released a report this week that confirms with 90 percent certainty that human activity — namely the unfettered burning of fossil fuels — is the main driver behind global warming.
Duh. Does now seem like a good time to try to curb those carbon dioxide emissions? Our government doesn’t think so.

According to the New York Times,
Secretary of Energy Samuel Bodman rejected the idea of unilateral limits on emissions. “We are a small contributor to the overall, when you look at the rest of the world, so it’s really got to be a global solution, he said.
Small contributor, Mr. Secretary? The United States, with about 5 percent of the world’s population, contributes about 25 percent of the greenhouse gas emissions, more than any other country.
Aren’t we supposed to be the shining light on the hill? What kind of moral authority can we claim when, even acknowledging the ever-growing damage we’re causing with our fossil fuel consumption, our government refuses to take steps to curb that damage without “a global solution.”
Come on, Mr. President. With all you’ve managed to break in the course of your two Presidential terms, can’t we all agree that a new and forward-thinking energy policy might just be the Presidential legacy that we all can be proud of in 2008?
